If recent surveys are correct, there are only a mere 2% – 5% of professing Christians actively sharing their faith verbally. That’s a sad reality when we live in a country of religious freedom. We do not live in a restricted area where Gospel proclamation is forbidden. The question then is why are we not telling the world or even our neighborhoods the life-giving Gospel? We came to a conclusion of 10 reasons why you don’t share your faith, or specifically, the Gospel. These are short and pithy, and require serious heart examination. Prayerfully consider these reasons:
You fear man more than you fear God.
This can include many things like being mocked, getting assaulted, or seeking the approval of man (John 7:13; 12:42,43). Sadly, we fear those who can only kill us, not the One who can kill us and destroy both body and soul in hell (Matthew 10:28). It’s time to put that sin to death.
There’s unrepented sin in your life.
When we have unconfessed, unrepented sin in our lives, it will disable us from telling the Gospel. Satan will be warranted to attack you as a hypocrite. Our sinful patterns and behaviors are a bad witness to the world, who is watching. So everyday repent and believe the Gospel.
You don’t really believe that God is going to send anyone to hell.
Some of us are shy, others are too embarrassed to speak of God’s judgment for guilty sinners. This is far too common in today’s zeitgeist. People are buying up books that question the reality of hell and embrace universalism. Jesus spoke more of hell than He did heaven. Most of what we know of hell is from the teachings of Christ (Matthew 25:41, 46).
You love yourself more than loving the Lost.
We prefer the easy life. We don’t want to go out of our comfort zone. The most loving thing that you can do for a nonbeliever is to inconvenience yourself and tell them how God demonstrated His love for us. Don’t be ashamed of how through the blood of God’s Son anyone may have peace with God.
You are ignorant of the Gospel.
We use the excuse, “I won’t make sense,” or “I’ll say the wrong thing,” or “I don’t know enough.” This is often due to our slothfulness in studying the Word of God (Colossians 4:6; 1 Peter 3:15). Commit yourself to the Word. Feed your soul before you feed your body.
Your so-called faith is not worth “sharing.”
It amazes me how people can rally together at an intersection to help petition for a candidate or to recall an official. Yet when it comes to sharing the Good News of Jesus we don’t value it worthy of standing on a street corner. You may not know how to get started, but if you care enough about that person you will find a way.
You lack the confidence to trust the Holy Spirit.
If you’re a Christian you have the Holy Spirit dwelling within you. He is your Helper. He will help you to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment (John 16:8-11, 13). Far too often we give in to pragmatic methods just to win souls. God does the saving, you don’t. You’re the paperboy, so deliver the Good News.
You don’t want to appear outspoken.
This one always baffles me…we are quick to boast of our favorite sports team or political party, but will remain silent of the Son of God. We’re afraid to be called a ‘religious nut’, but vocal to proselyte to everyone about what vehicle to drive or what computer to type on. Shame on us when even the stones will cry out (Luke 19:40).
You don’t want God to be glorified.
The end of all evangelism is the glory of God (1 Peter 4:11). We pray with Jesus that the Father’s kingdom come, that His will be done. All of heaven rejoices over one sinner who repents.
You are not saved.
Charles Spurgeon said it honestly, “Have you no wish for others to be saved? Then you are not saved yourself. Be sure of that.”
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, if you are not actively sharing the gospel you are missing one of the greatest blessings this side of heaven! Witnessing will profoundly change your Christian walk. It will help you fall in love with the Savior who died for you and is interceding for you right now. It will take you out of your comfort zone and cause your faith to be tested and grow. Your lukewarm Christianity will become red hot. Don’t go another day without doing something to equip yourself to reach out to those who are lost and perishing.
